Warnings Issued to Surgeons for Stryker V40 Hip Implants

Stryker V40 Recall Lawyers - Sarasota, Bradenton, Punta Gorda, Tallahassee
Stryker has started sending warning notices to surgeons stating that they have received more adverse reports than expected for hip implant failures using specific Stryker V40 femoral heads. The V40 femoral heads being warned about were manufactured prior to 2011. This new warning underscores the concerns that have already been raised for the thousands of artificial hip implant recipients using the Stryker V40 femoral head.

The implant failure in this case revolves around where the femoral head of the implant connects to the femoral neck. In many of the reported cases, the nature of the failure involves the femoral neck taper being ground down to the shape of a bird’s beak. This is called a taper failure. While the location of the failure in Stryker V40 cases is different than past metal hip implant failures or recalls, the results for the patient are the same.

Patients that have received a hip implant using the Stryker V40 should look for the following signs or symptoms associated with their hip implant:

  • Metallosis – a.k.a. metal blood poisoning, specifically chromium and/or cobalt
  • Severe pain or discomfort in the hip, even months or years after the implant surgery
  • Loss of mobility
  • Clicking or grinding from the implant site
  • Dislocation or fracture of the hip
  • Premature revision surgery

Despite a warning being issued in Australia for the Stryker V40 femoral heads and Canada issuing a recall for these hip implant devices, the FDA has yet to issue a recall in the U.S.

The warnings from Stryker involve the following V40 Femoral Heads, manufactured prior to 2011:
