VA Hospital in Florida Leaves Veteran’s Body in Shower Room for Over 9 Hours

According to multiple news reports, staff members at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare facility, in Seminole, FL, left the body of a deceased veteran lying in a shower for almost 10 hours.

The unidentified veteran died in the Florida VA medical facility in February, after being under hospice care. After the veteran died, hospice staff members moved the body into a hallway where it was left for an undisclosed period of time. It was then relocated to a shower room where it was left unattended for over nine hours.

According to a 24 page internal report, Bay Pines VA staff members requested a transport to move the body from hospice care to the morgue. The transport directed staff members to call dispatchers instead. The request to dispatch was never made and those responsible for transporting the body never arrived.

After the veteran’s body was finally moved, the staff members at Bay Pines VA falsified documents, trying to blame the incident on a communication breakdown that never occurred. Additionally, staff members tried to place the blame on a lack of clerical staff. They went so far as to failing to update an organizational chart, making it more difficult to determine who was in charge at the time of the incident.

A Bay Pines VA spokesman called the report’s findings “unacceptable”, stating that the hospital’s Administrative Investigation Board ordered retraining for the staff members involved and hospital procedures to be changed in response. According to Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., “Unsurprisingly, not a single VA employee has been fired following this incident, despite a clear lack of concern and respect for the veteran. The men and women who sacrificed on behalf of our nation deserve better.”
